There were some scary moments on Highway 26 on Sunday, when a large tree fell across the road, blocking all traffic and smashing part of a pregnant woman’s car.

It happened in the Coast Range west of Manning around 3:45 p.m.

The woman in the damaged car has been identified as Halley Von Dehn, 30, of North Plains.

David Kutnyak told FOX 12 he was coming back from the coast with his family and was a few cars behind Von Dehn.

He described what happened as a freak incident during a small windstorm.

“We actually saw the tree coming down,” Kutnyak said. “It was just seconds and other cars would have been really damaged and injured.”

At first, he thought the tree missed all the cars and he and his son started taking video as they got out of the car to take a better look.

That’s when he learned the tree hit part of Von Dehn’s car, damaging the top of it.

Kutnyak said he spoke with Von Dehn at the scene, who told him she bumped her head but was otherwise okay. He said she was very shaken up.

He said the way the tree came down, a branch hit the car and the road, essentially holding the tree up so it didn’t entirely crush her car and she was able to drive under it before the tree collapsed.

“She should play the lottery,” he added. “She was very, very lucky. I would say within a split second later and she would have been hit hard. Probably killed.”

Police say Von Dehn was checked out at the hospital and her car had to be towed from the scene.

Kutnyak said a number of people who were stopped in their cars came out to help clear branches. One man, coming back from a job involving trees, even had a chainsaw in his trunk and went to work.

ODOT reported the road was clear and reopened to traffic within an hour.
