HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

The City of Hillsboro celebrated the groundbreaking of a new place that will house thousands of people.

The new residential development is located in South Hillsboro, and will be the largest master-planned residential development in Oregon history.

South Hillsboro's 1,400 acres will be the future home to about 20,000 residents over the next two decades.

During Tuesday's groundbreaking ceremony, Mayor Jerry Willey lead a toast in celebration of the planning.

"In the immediate, we are probably a year away from building homes because it takes a lot to build that kind of infrastructure. Then I think the houses will come along rapidly. We have a variety of housing options that are gonna be here so it's gonna be interesting, the little pockets that are developed," said Mayor Willey.

The South Hillsboro Community Plan will include 286 acres of new parks and open space, with 15 miles of new trails to go along with the new homes and schools planned for the area just southeast of the Fred Meyer at TV Highway and Southeast 67th Avenue.
