Police: Man leaves 'suspicious package' at Newberg Public Safety building

NEWBERG, OR (KPTV) -

Newberg-Dundee Police Department responded to the Newberg Public Safety building on the report of a suspicious package.

According to police, at 5 p.m. a man wearing a backpack walked into the front lobby of the building. The reception and records desk had already been closed for the day but the front doors had not been locked.

The man walked around the lobby for about 45 seconds. He then took off the backpack and left if on the seats in the waiting area and left the building.

Communications Officers in the dispatch center called police officers who began searching the area for the suspect but he was not found.

The front lobby and business offices in the building were immediately cleared and the building was secured.

The Oregon State Police bomb squad responded to the scene.

Police said the OSP bomb squad checked the items in the backpack. The backpack did not contain a destructive device.
