ST. HELENS, OR (KPTV) -

A man who led police on a chase on Highway 30 died after slamming into the back a car in St. Helens and crashing his SUV over railroad tracks off the roadway.

The situation began at 12:54 p.m. Thursday when a Scappoose Police Department officer attempted to stop a 2004 Toyota Highlander on Highway 30. The driver pulled over initially, but then sped away.

Scappoose police followed the SUV for a short time, but ended the pursuit in the interest of public safety, according to investigators.

A few minutes later, the driver of the Toyota crashed into the back of a westbound 2012 Honda Civic on the highway in St. Helens.

The SUV left the road, went over the railroad tracks next to the highway and came to a stop down an embankment.

Police said the man driving the SUV was not wearing a seat belt. He died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to troopers.

The woman driving the Honda went across three lanes after being hit and drove through a fence. She suffered serious injuries and was taken to a Portland hospital for treatment.

The names of the drivers have not been released.

Police are continuing to investigate.
