Firefighters worked fast to contain a brush fire just outside of Cornelius city limits Friday afternoon.

Crews from the Cornelius Fire Department arrived to find flames and black smoke burning a field along Cornelius Schefflin Road and Verboort Road.

Firefighters worked to put out hot spots, but the fire scorched about five acres.

According to firefighters, some flames jumped the road at one point but were contained.

During the fight, conditions were just right to form a fire vortex.

Smoke from the fire closed portions of both Verboort Road and Cornelius Schefflin Road.

No one was hurt due to the fire or response, and investigators are working to find out the cause.
