COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, OR (KPTV) -

With the hot weekend ahead, you may be flocking to the Gorge to cool off in the Columbia River or sweat it out on the trails. But Multnomah County deputies want to warn that you could be a target for car prowlers.

Since the beginning of May, deputies have taken 30 reports on car break-ins in the Gorge - from small trailheads to major parking lots, including the one at Multnomah Falls.

Sarah Larson came down from her hike on Angel’s Rest Monday evening to find her back window smashed and her purse stolen. She purposely hid it under the passenger seat, but thieves still got to it and took all of her credit cards.

Larson called police and filed a report, but so far, she hasn’t heard any updates on the suspects.

If you’re heading to the Columbia River Gorge this weekend, Larson has some advice for you.

“Don’t leave your purse in your car!" Larson said with a defeated laugh.

There is some good news, however.  Officials say car break-ins in the Gorge this summer are actually down from last year. Signs are posted at Multnomah Falls warning visitors not to leave valuables in their cars.
