Weather roundup: Hot fairgoers and cool stargazers

Posted: Updated:

If you stepped outside at all Friday, then you know it was a hot one. In fact, it was the warmest day of the month so far.

Fox 12 stopped by the Clark County Fair to find out how folks were dealing with the heat.

“It’s pretty hot outside, yeah it’s really hot. That’s all I have to say about the weather. It’s hot!” exclaimed one excited kid at the fair.

“It’s not that bad," another kid said.

Fairgoers and workers alike were doing what they could to stay cool in this scorching August heat.

“I have this [bag] full of ice to put around my neck to cool off, or stand in front of the fan,” said an elephant ear maker.

This year, misting stations are some of the hottest attractions at the fair.

But people weren’t the only ones flocking to the water.

When Trinity Caldwell isn't showing off her award-winning sheep, she's scrubbing them up and hosing them down to keep them cool.

“If their stomachs are moving fast then we know they’re hot,” Caldwell explained.

Meantime, out in the Columbia River Gorge some decided to forgo the sights and sounds of the fair for a different view.

“I think there might be some people trying to escape the heat that might want to come out this way,” says a woman enjoying date night at Vista House.

But weather-wise, this couple is more concerned about the clouds than the temperature.

“Even the wispy stuff is going to get in the way a little bit,” the couple said.

That's because they, along with several others, are packing in for a front row view of a dazzling display in the sky.

“We had planned this for a while to see the meteor shower,” the couple said.

There is also a watch party just down the road put on by OMSI at Rooster Rock.

Organizers say they expect packed roads, so keep that in mind if you’re thinking about stargazing out in the Gorge.
