A deputy district attorney in Crook County sped away from a Marion County Sheriff's Office deputy, abandoned his car and was arrested the following morning after returning to the scene to try to find it, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

A deputy attempted to stop an Audi A3 going 80 mph in a 55 mph zone on Highway 22 near Lyons at 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies said the driver sped off on a gravel road. Due to the large amount of dust, the deputy was forced to slow down before finding the car abandoned in a driveway on the 11000 block of Riverhaven Lane Southeast near Stayton.

A K-9 attempted to locate the driver, but he was not found. The car was towed from the scene as evidence.

At 6:30 a.m. Monday, a man living in the home where the car had been abandoned called the sheriff's office to report a stranger on his property.

Deputies responded to the scene and found Matthew Reiner, 29, of Bend, walking away from the property.

Deputies said Reiner had an Audi key and was determined to be the registered owner of the car. Deputies said they also learned he is a deputy district attorney for the Crook County District Attorney's Office.

Reiner was described as dirty, wet and scraped up when he was arrested.

Reiner was arrested on charges of attempt to elude police in a vehicle and on foot. He was booked into the Marion County Jail and later released. Reiner is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 12.

Investigators said it is unclear why Reiner did not stop for the deputy Sunday night.
