PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland will have to keep waiting to get Google Fiber.

Google was preparing to bring its ultra-high-speed internet to the rose city, but officials in Mayor Charlie Hale’s office said those plans have been suspended.

According to a new report in the Wall Street Journal, Google Fiber’s parent company Alphabet is “rethinking” its strategy for the high-speed internet business.

The new report states that the company is now looking to use wireless technology to connect homes instead of expensive fiber optic cables like they have done around Kansas City, Austin, Texas, and Provo, Utah.

The change is direction means Google has suspended projects in Portland and San Jose, California, among others.

The mayor's office said the city is waiting to hear from Google about their future plans, adding that city officials are still interested in the service and open to providing land needed to bring the project to Portland.
