PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

On Sunday morning, home surveillance video caught a man wearing a cap, white t-shirt and black shorts steal a bike from a Northeast Portland home.

The homeowner, Elissa Middlemas, said it shows the theft happened early Sunday morning near Northeast Weidler Street and 19th Avenue.

Middlemas said she typically puts her bike inside her home but forgot for the first time.

"The feeling of violation when someone comes on your property is pretty scary.”

Middlemas hopes someone will recognize the man captured on surveillance video.

In the process of reporting her stolen bike to police, Middlemas realized she could’ve been more prepared.

“I had to dig through the photos,” Middlemas said.

The Portland Police Bike Theft Task Force reports bikes are stolen in the city every day. Officers will take reports on stolen bikes, but without any means of identification, like a serial number, it can be difficult to return recovered bikes to its owner.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation has listed several tips on their page to help prevent bikes from getting stolen.
