KELSO, WA (KPTV) -

A police officer shot and killed a man who attacked a worker, as well as a customer and the officer, with a walking stick at a Kelso store, according to investigators.

A Kelso officer responded to a shoplifting report at the Flying K Gas & Grocery on the 100 block of West Main Street at around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said the suspect had left the store, but returned as the officer was there taking a report.

Cowlitz County Sheriff Mark Nelson said the suspect, a 27-year-old black man, was carrying a pole-type object similar to a walking stick and used it to assault a woman working in the store and a customer.

Nelson said the suspect then assaulted the officer with the stick, causing head, arm and leg injuries.

The officer, identified as John Johnston, drew his weapon and shot the suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnston is a 22-year veteran of the Kelso Police Department.

The clerks and the officer were taken to the hospital, where they were treated and released.

The suspect was believed to be a transient and Nelson said law enforcement had been in contact with him previously over the last week.
