PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Former Portland Police Chief Mike Reese was sworn in as the interim sheriff of Multnomah County on Wednesday.

Reese was selected for the role following the retirement of embattled former Sheriff Dan Staton.

Staton announced his retirement in May following allegations of misconduct, a Department of Justice investigation and calls for his resignation.

The previous month, the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution to appoint Reese as sheriff if Staton were to step down.

"As your sheriff I will do my very best to lead this agency through the difficult challenges ahead and to provide exceptional services to Multnomah County," Reese said Wednesday. "Now let's get to work."

Reese retired as Portland Police Bureau chief in January 2015. His successor, Larry O'Dea, announced his retirement in June amid investigations into a shooting that injured his friend.
