LYONS, OR (KPTV) -

An explosive device was discovered by a city employee near the Lyons Public Library.

The public works employee found the homemade device in the road on the 200 block of 8th Street on Wednesday. The man stored it in his vehicle, notified law enforcement and turned it over to a deputy Thursday.

The device, which was 2 inches long and wrapped in tape with a fuse, was placed on the ground in a cleared area for the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad to investigate.

The device was then rendered safe for disposal.

A bomb technician reported that the explosive device was capable of taking off a hand if it had been detonated while someone was holding it.

No suspects have been identified. Anyone with information is asked to contact Deputy Russell Williams at the Linn County Sheriff's Office at 541-967-3950.

Sheriff Bruce Riley asks anyone who comes across any suspicious looking device to not touch it, clear a safe area around the device and immediately report it to local law enforcement.
