Tips for staying cool as Portland sees record high temperatures

Posted: Updated:

Here are a few tips for those looking to keep cool as temperatures in Portland climb to near-record levels.

Shutting the blinds and curtains and keeping the windows closed will help keep out the heat, and homeowners can even put a solar shield or foil on windows to reflect the sunlight.

Place fans strategically around the house. Avoid putting fans near the window until it starts to cool down at night and put another fan in the middle of the room.

A DIY air conditioner may help keep a smaller room cool, and the necessary parts will cost only about $20. One trick, though, is to use store-bought ice, so the freezer doesn’t have to work harder which warm the room.

What people are putting in their bodies is also key. In addition to drinking plenty of water, try to add high-water-content fruits like melons and pineapple, as well leafy green vegetables.

Spicy foods may also be helpful since the sweat they can bring out actually helps the body cool down faster.

For those that just have to head outside, remember the sunscreen and try loose lightweight clothing.

For those heading out with kids or pets, remember that in this kind of weather there really is no amount of safe time to leave them in a parked car, even with the windows open.

There are also many cooling centers available to help people cool off that are open to the public. The regional 211 site has listings for centers in Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Clark, Cowlitz, Marion, Yamhill and Polk counties.
