MULTNOMAH COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

A K-9 unit with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is getting new protection in honor of another K-9 officer.

K-9 Ranger will receive a new protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from the group Vested Interest in K9s.

The vest, which has a value of $1,795 to $2,234, will last for five years and protects against bullets and stabbing.

K-9 Ranger joined the sheriff’s office in 2014 and is a 5-year-old German Shepherd imported from the Netherlands. His Handler, Deputy Todd Weber, is grateful for the extra protection for his partner.

"This vest will provide much-needed protection for Ranger while he is on patrol or engaged in higher risk captures or deployments," he said.

The vest is expected to be delivered in eight to ten weeks, and will be embroidered with a memorial for a Pittsburgh Bureau of Police K-9 named Rocco.
