Residents of the Murrayhill and Cooper Mountain areas of Beaverton may want to double check their mailbox.

Neighbors in this area said they had their first break-in of a group mailbox about two weeks ago, and their postal carrier said they’re not alone.

Terri Jones was lucky that none of her mail was stolen, but she said her regular postal carrier alerted her about the theft.

On Saturday, August 6, the carrier noticed the first break-in at the mailbox and told neighbors that it had been happening in other nearby neighborhoods as well.

Jones has decided to have postal officials hold her mail at the Aloha post office until the mailbox can be replaced.

Jones said she has lived in the neighborhood for more than 25 years and has never had an issue with mail theft, but she knows her neighborhood is changing.

“I feel like our community is changing a bit,” she said. “I do see people walking around with backpacks and different people that are possibly not our neighbors and sometimes I get a feeling of uneasiness.”

Postal officials advise that if someone’s mailbox gets broken into they should file a police report first and then file a stolen mail complaint on the postal service website, USPS.com.
