PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The heat did some real damage in Portland Friday afternoon, as store owners said the intense temperatures led to a glass window shattering at Popina Swimwear in the Hollywood District.

Amelia Wirthlin was working at the shop at the time and said she heard a loud bang between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

"I’ve heard a gunshot before and it was almost as loud as that, it was terrifying,” Wirthlin said, adding that there was a customer near the glass when it shattered.

"The woman that was here when it happened came running over to me and said, ‘I swear I didn't break the window but look look at the window!’” Wirthlin recalled.

She also mentioned that the sun was beaming down on the glass and there was a hole right where the sun’s energy was focused with a ray of light shining through after it broke.

Wirthlin said the sound of glass ticking could be heard as the cracks were spidering across the pane.

"At first, it was just a solid sheet, and then it was a webbing of cracks and now little pieces are falling out, and I’m actually a little afraid that it is going to fall out on somebody," Wirthlin explained.

Hours after the sun shattered the glass, the window was boarded up. Wirthlin is hopeful that the heat forecast for Saturday won’t bring much of the same.

“Now I’m worried for all the windows, now that that has happened and I’m worried for my own windows, I had no idea the sun could do something like that,” Wirthlin said.
