BATTLE GROUND, WA (KPTV) -

A Battle Ground man is trying to get his dog back after it was adopted out by the Humane Society of Southwest Washington.

William Jones posted on the humane society's Facebook page that while he was gone fighting a wildfire, his dog escaped from a friend's home. The dog was picked up by animal control and didn't have a chip or license on it.

Going with Humane Society policy, after six days of no one coming to claim the dog or any posts about a lost dog, it went up for adoption.

The Humane Society of Southwest Washington said they followed protocol and that this is an unfortunate incident, and they have no legal authority over the dog anymore.

“People are very upset with us because they felt that we had purposely adopted this dog while he was fighting fire and we didn’t even know the dog had an owner," said President Stacy Graham.

The family who adopted the dog told the humane society they've bonded with the it and take it everywhere with them. They don't plan to return it.

The humane society said it's important that your animals are microchipped and registered.
