A driver who hit a teenage girl in southeast Portland was speeding and rapidly passing vehicles before the deadly collision, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to Southeast 43rd Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard at 3:49 p.m. Friday.

Investigators said a gold Lexus driven by 20-year-old Abdulrahman Noorah hit a girl crossing Hawthorne Boulevard in an unmarked crosswalk.

Witnesses said the Lexus was going 55 to 60 mph from Southeast 46th Avenue and had been passing other vehicles while driving in the center lane. Noorah nearly collided with several cars near 44th Avenue, according to police.

Witnesses told police Noorah continued driving westbound at a high rate of speed after hitting the girl and no attempt was made to stop.

Noorah did eventually return to the scene and was later arrested. Police determined his license was suspended.

Noorah was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of second-degree manslaughter, felony failure to perform the duties of a driver (hit and run) and reckless driving.

Investigators are still determining if intoxication was a factor.

Police said Ranger Station, a nearby business, closed down to make their building available to the family and others involved in this incident.
