PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

If you take the MAX to and from work your commute is about to be slowed down.

On Sunday, TriMet began work on a major project in the Rose Quarter to replace 30-year-old tracks and switches.

"Any light rail system of this age, there comes a time when it needs major improvements and upgrades and our time is now for MAX," TriMet Spokeswoman Roberta Altstadt said.

Trains will be running on different schedules with some coming less frequently because of detours. TriMet has closed the Rose Quarter, Convention Center and 7th Avenue stations.

"For the Monday morning commute we are asking folks to plan for at least an extra 35 to 40 minutes," Altstadt said.

For drivers, there is a detour in place at Northeast 1st and Northeast Holladay.

The project is expected to last two weeks. For more information visit: trimet.org
