Homeless campers and RVs evicted from Delta Park

Posted: Updated:

Local parkgoers and businesses say homeless people and their trailers line Delta Park in north Portland, and now some trailers will have to move out.

At Vanport Batting Cages on park property, Murray Todd said there have been many parking and safety issues. The City of Portland notified trailer owners’ Thursday with a 72-hour eviction notice.

"It's not good for business and I don't think it's good for regular park users," Todd said. "But at the same time, how do we address this situation?"

Sunday was the deadline to vacate and some people were not sure where they will go.

"I don't get why people make us move if we're not doing anything," said camper Justin Christopher.

Christopher said he will move Sunday and but won't be surprised if he gets evicted again.

"You can just start the car and find a different place," he said.

Todd said he is relieved some trailers will move but assumes they will be back. There were other people who were not given a notice, saying they parked after it was handed out. They said they won't move unless they have to.

The City of Portland says there are three options for people who need temporary sleeping options: to find a shelter with an opening, to join an organized camp that’s approved by the City, and joining an approved car or RV camp. The city says it’s working to build the system for organized, sanctioned camping and car/RV parking. Fox 12 has reached out to the city and is waiting for a response.
