BATTLE GROUND, WA (KPTV) -

A Battle Ground firefighter’s dog has been returned to the Humane Society after he was adopted by a new family while his owner was away fighting a wildfire.

While owner William Jones was away, his dog Hunter escaped from a friend’s home, according to Facebook.

Hunter was picked up by animal control and taken to the Humane Society for Southwest Washington. Hunter did not have a chip or license on him.

The Humane Society said they followed policy and put Hunter up for adoption six days later after no one came to claim him.

The family who adopted the dog originally said they had bonded with him and had no plans on giving him back.

The Humane Society posted on Facebook Sunday that the dog had been returned to the Humane Society. They said the family was deeply saddened but understood that the Jones needed his dog back.

Jones will be reunited with his dog when he can get back from the fire he is fighting.
