PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Starting Tuesday, Portland metro residents will be to text to 911 for help.

Emergency officials announced Friday the new Text-to-911 service will be available through 911 agencies in Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Officials recognized that texting to 911 could be a safe alternative when speaking out loud would put a 911 caller in danger.

Text-to-911 will also benefit those who may be deaf, speech impaired or hard of hearing.

Although Text-to-911 is a helpful addition to emergency response systems, officials said their primary message is “call if you can, text if you can’t.”

Voice calls are still the fastest way to communicate and receive help from 911.

The Text-to-911 service will be available in the Clackamas, Clark, Columbia, Marion, Multnomah and Washington counties.
