PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

At least 14 wildfires that have broken out in and around central Oregon over the past few weeks are being investigated as arson.

The fires that are believed to have been intentionally set include the Withers Fire north of Paisley. That fire started on Aug. 17 and has burned more than 3,400 acres.

Firefighters shifted to a primarily monitoring and mop up operation on the Withers Fire by Monday, with a projected containment date of Aug. 31.

Authorities are asking people to remain vigilant in preventing wildfires and reporting arsonists.

Since Jan. 1, there have been 486 wildfires caused by people in the state, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry. That number is an increase over the 10-year average, according to the state fire marshal.

Tips about suspected arson fires can be reported to Oregon State Police at 503-375-3555 or 911 in case of an emergency.
