VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A former substitute teacher has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for possession of child pornography.

Darrel James Dwight, 53, was arrested in December 2014. He pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of child pornography in April.

Dwight was sentenced in court Monday.

Court documents state Dwight had computer thumb drives that contained images and videos of children engaging in sexually explicit activity.

The children were described as boys between the ages of 8 years old and 16 years old.

Dwight had worked as a substitute teacher for Vancouver Public Schools and Evergreen Public Schools, according to court documents.

At the time of his arrest, Dwight was a full-time substitute teacher in the Evergreen district, where he had worked as a substitute since 2009. Administrators said he passed a criminal background check.

His typical assignments were one or two days with the same class. He substituted at the elementary level, grades K-5, in the Evergreen district.

Dwight was removed from the district's substitute system at the time of his arrest.

Court documents state Dwight was also a troop leader for the Boy Scouts in Vancouver.

Once released, Dwight will be under post-prison supervision for 15 years.
