VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

During Tuesday's school board meeting, teachers from the Evergreen School District said they will go on strike if their list of demands are not met by the first day of school.

Teachers are demanding a proper curriculum, pay raises and more counselors for students, something they said they have not received in years.

On August 31, ironically the first day of school, the contracts for teachers in the district will be up. Instead of working without a contract as others have in the past, teachers said there is no way they're letting the district get the best of them.

"Nobody gets into teaching to get rich! It's really in the best interest of students, so really, the ball is kind of in their court," one teacher said.

According to teachers, they've gone years without raises, health insurance and even jobs.

The district sent out this letter to parents that states:

"Evergreen public schools believes our teachers are the backbone of the district and have and will continue to offer fair local market wages, benefits and working conditions."

One teacher said, "I really hope we start school on the first day of school. Nobody wants a strike."
