PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

TriMet is looking to hire a whole lot of bus drivers.

The agency is hiring 20 bus operators every three weeks for the foreseeable future.

According to TriMet, the need for additional drivers is due to service expansions, promotions and retirements.

TriMet provides the training and testing for a commercial driver's license. After a six-week training period and a six-month probationary period, other career opportunities open up, including positions as full-time bus operators, MAX or Portland Streetcar operators, dispatchers and station agents.

Student drivers earn $14.25 per hour during the six-week training period, working 40 hours per week.

Once training is complete, bus operators work part-time and earn $15.63 an hour for the first six months. Pay increases every four months until the top pay of $28.39 is reached.

Part-time operators receive the same medical, dental and vision benefits as full-time employees after 30 days of employment.

TriMet announced in June it was bumping up the wage for beginning drivers by $3 to $14.25 in hopes of attracting more qualified applicants.

A hiring event is scheduled for Sept. 17 at the Oregon Convention Center, 777 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in the A meeting rooms, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Attendees will be able to apply for a job and talk to staff members about working for TriMet.
