WOODBURN, OR (KPTV) -

The Woodburn Police Department is seeing an uptick in telephone scam calls involving iTunes gift cards.

The scammers either claim to be from the IRS or tell the would-be victim they have won a cash prize.

In each case the person receiving the call is directed to purchase iTunes gift cards and give the gift card codes to the caller.

Government agencies do not direct people to purchase gift cards.

Police advise anyone who receives this call to hang up the phone and contact the government agency themselves or their local police department.

The Woodburn Police Department also cautions people not to fall for anyone advising they are a prize winner where the "winner" has to pay money or make other purchases to redeem the prize.
