PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police arrested a driver they said was intoxicated when he hit a woman walking in the bike lane on North Interstate Avenue Wednesday evening.

Officers responded at 8:46 p.m. to the scene near Schmeer Road where they found Ashley Wirth, 23, suffering from serious injuries.

Wirth was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to survive her injuries.

The driver of the car that hit Wirth, 37-year-old Robert William Leary, called in the incident.

After investigating, officers determined Leary was driving north when he hit Wirth as she was walking against traffic.

Leary was arrested on charges of third-degree assault, failure to perform the duties of a driver, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving, and driving under the influence of intoxicants. He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail.
