PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man tried shoplifting two bottles of wine and then punched an officer who was trying to arrest him Friday morning, according to Portland police.

Officers said they responded to a call at the Plaid Pantry store at 4504 Southeast 122nd Avenue around 7:10 a.m. after reports of a man stealing two bottles of wine from the store.

When officers arrived, they saw the suspect, 22-year-old Drew Christopher Stokes, standing in front of the store drinking the wine.

As officers attempted to take him into custody, Stokes punched one of the officers and fled the scene.

More officers responded to the area and were able to locate Stokes nearby thanks to the help of neighbors.

Stokes was taken into custody and booked into the Multnomah County Jail. He faces charges of assaulting a public safety officer, second-degree escape, resisting arrest and third-degree theft.

The officer did not suffer any serious injuries in the incident.
