PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A week after a Portland teen was hit and killed crossing Southeast Hawthorne Blvd, hundreds gathered to remember her and call for an end to pedestrian and cyclists deaths across Portland.

Fallon Smart, 15, was crossing Hawthorne near Southeast 43rd Ave., with her family when she was hit and killed August 19. Witnesses told police they saw the car’s driver, Abdulrahman Noorah, going close to 60 mph and weaving in and out of traffic before the crash.

Police said Smart had started to cross the street when they say Noorah hit her and just kept going.

Noorah has been charged with manslaughter, hit-and-run and reckless driving.

On Friday, cyclists rode from downtown Portland to the memorial site where they laid flowers and shared memories they’d had with Smart.

Many of the riders carried flowers and signs calling for the city of Portland to make the streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

“She was a beautiful spirit,” Smart’s cousin Dixie Hoback said. “I just can’t let it go, I can’t just say you know this 15-year-old kid died needlessly.”

“Fallon was my best friend which didn’t make sense because she was my daughter,” Fawn Lengvenis said.

Smart's mother says she was a bright young woman who was gifted with exceptional intelligence and that her life was cut far too short.

"I don’t think that it is fair to just say it is a loss to me or to her family,” Lengvenis said. “She was rare, she could have made all of us better.”

A judge set Noorah’s bail at $1 million. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 30.
