BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

After years of spending long nights in the hospital, enduring numerous rounds of chemotherapy and participating in clinical trials, a 15-year-old boy lost his battle to a rare bone cancer on Saturday.

Sam Day was 9 years old when he was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma.

After two surgeries over the past few weeks, Day was unable to recover from his illness and passed away Saturday morning.

According to his friends, Day was a shining light, never letting on how he was sick.

"Sam’s positivity is hard to ignore," Day's friend Kaitlyn Stewart said.

People who knew Day gathered at Sunset High School Sunday for a memorial service. Friends gave speeches, sang songs and lit candles in his honor, many showing up in t-shirts with the Superman logo and the words “I Am Sam” or “Sam's Army” written on them.

Day’s older sister Natalie said she felt very humbled when a flood of supporters filled the field to remember her brother.

"Very loved. We're very fortunate to have a great community who’s willing to come and support us whether they knew Sam or not,” she said.

Natalie shared stories about her brother that she said will be in heart always.

"Sometimes I would go into his room, and if he was just sitting there and he didn't want to talk to me, I would just flicker his light on and off and on and off until he talked to me, and he started to do that with me," she shared.

Day would have been a freshman at Sunset this fall. Anyone who wishes to assist with the Day family expenses can go to DayFamilyFund.com.
