Teachers, Evergreen schools reach agreement to prevent strike

Posted: Updated:

The Evergreen School District and teachers represented by the Evergreen Education Association have reached a contract extension that will avert a possible strike that could disrupt the first week of classes.

The two sides said they had been negotiating non-stop for a week in order to ensure the school year could start as scheduled on August 31.

Under the terms of the proposed deal, teachers represented by the EEA will receive “significant” pay raises over the next three years, as well as any cost of living adjustments offered by Washington state.

Both sides also said they wanted to work together on improvements in areas including the shortage of substitutes, support for special needs student and increasing support and access to counseling for the students in the district with the most need.

The full details of the agreement will be made public Tuesday night, and the deal still must be ratified by both the school board and the teachers’ union.
