A man accused of murdering a woman at a hotel near Lloyd Center was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at Oregon State Hospital

Tae Bum Yoon, 25, was committed to the hospital earlier this month for a period not to exceed 30 days.

Yoon, of Bellevue, Washington, was arrested in January 2015, nearly two weeks after the body of 24-year-old Ashley Benson was discovered in a stairwell at the DoubleTree hotel in northeast Portland on Dec. 26, 2014.

According to court documents, Yoon, who often uses the first name Chris, somehow discovered that a Chris Youn had a reservation at the hotel. He checked in a day before the reservation using the other man's name and paid with cash, a probable cause affidavit states.

Investigators said Yoon then contacted escort services that featured online photos of Benson.

Court documents state Yoon had previously been in contact with Benson and police found an email he sent her that said, "You will be compensated for all the time you invested in me. I have every intention of paying you. Before you blame me 100%, I want you to know that you did break our agreement. You did post, although I forgave you, I did find new listings on Houston Texas Backpage."

A probable cause affidavit states after Benson was killed, Yoon went to another hotel down the street, but left when they wouldn't accept cash.

A clerk at the second hotel described Yoon as being sweaty with cuts on his face.

Police began watching Yoon when he returned to Bellevue. He was arrested after coming back to Portland on Jan. 7, 2015. When officers contacted him at Union Station, he said, "How did you find me?" according to court documents.

Yoon was arraigned after his arrest on charges of murder and manslaughter.

According to court documents, a report on his evaluation from Oregon State Hospital will include, "Findings and conclusions as to whether or not the defendant, at the time the homicide was committed, was under the influence of extreme emotional disturbance, whether or not the disturbance was the result of the defendant's own intentional, knowing, reckless or criminally negligent act, and whether or not there was a reasonable explanation for the disturbance."

The next court hearing in the case is scheduled for Sept. 16.

This story was corrected to reflect that a determination on Yoon's ability to stand trial has not been made at this time.
