PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland teenager is in the hospital with serious injuries after he got hit by a car Tuesday morning.

Fifteen-year-old Bradley Fortner was walking across North Columbia Boulevard near Midway Avenue when 28-year-old Natanael Lopez-Castillo hit him.

Lopez-Castillo stopped about a block away and walked back to the scene. He is cooperating with police.

Neighbor Maria Monry heard the sirens then saw Fortner lying in the street. As a mother herself, Monry worries for any child trying to cross Columbia Boulevard.

“It’s the easy way for them, but I think it’s very, very dangerous crossing the street every time,” said Monry. “Sometimes the cars, they don’t stop.”

Tom Egan is new to the neighborhood and lives right across Columbia Boulevard from George Middle School, right where the teen was hit.

Despite the fact that there’s a sky bridge right there, Egan says kids are constantly crossing the street below.

“We moved here on July 2 and we just knew it’s an inevitable thing that was going to happen," said Egan.

Fortner is a new freshman at Roosevelt High School. He is the second Portland teenager hit by a car in less than two weeks, the other was 15-year-old Fallon Smart. She died on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard.

Traffic investigators say they are still trying to figure out how and why Fortner got hit.
