TUALATIN, OR (KPTV) -

To say Kimberly Skukas is passionate about underwater hockey is a major understatement. Skukas, one of only 12 women on the U.S. Women’s Underwater Hockey Team, is at the pool every chance she gets.

In the 6 v. 6 game, players maneuver a puck on the bottom of a swimming pool and shoot in the opponent’s goal. The sport has taken Skukas around the world to places like Hungary and Colombia. This spring, her team placed seventh at Worlds in South Africa.

“It’s amazing. There’s a great amount of pride with being able to play at the top level for your country,” she said.

Now, Skukas is training for gold. She hopes to take the title at the next Worlds competition in Canada in 2018.

There are four teams in the state located in Corvallis, Eugene and Newport. The Portland scene is growing as more and more people turn up to play at Mt. Hood Community College each week. The Portland Underwater Group welcomes new players and practices on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. at the Aquatic Center. More information can be found at Meetup.com/Portland-Underwater-Hockey.
