VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Wednesday was the first day of school for kids in the Evergreen School District and this year, there was a big change.

High schools in the district are now starting their day at 8:40 a.m. Last year, classes began at 7:30 a.m.

Recent studies have shown that students perform better in school if they get more sleep.

Fox 12 spoke to several students who had mixed reactions.

"It's always good to be spending more time in my bed, rather than at school. Especially early in the morning," said junior Sam Ross.

"I have sports after school today, actually. And I'm not excited about that, but it's the price you pay," said sophomore Jenae Howard.

With the later start, students will be getting out of school later.

It's a new start for teachers in the district, as well.

On Tuesday night, teachers approved a new contract and avoided a strike.

Vancouver Public Schools and the Woodland School District also started classes on Wednesday.
