PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

After a 15-year-old was hit by a car while walking to school this week, the issue of crosswalk safety has become a major concern in Portland.

In neighborhoods across the metro area, people are complaining about unsafe roadways and inattentive drivers.

On Wednesday, the Portland Bureau of Transportation and the Portland Police Bureau tried to send a strong message to both drivers and pedestrians.

They set up an enforcement action outside Cesar Chavez School in north Portland, and they even recruited Sasquatch to make sure their message got across.

"I think it's great. There's a lot of speeders who drive along here. We gotta keep the interest of the kids at heart, and worry about them," said parent Brandon Larson.

Authorities want to remind everyone that under Oregon law, every intersection is a legal crosswalk, whether it is marked or unmarked.

Despite the highly visible nature of Wednesday morning's enforcement action, police issued four citations and issued four warnings.
