PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A speeding driver who hit and killed a man crossing the street in southeast Portland was arrested on charges of DUII and manslaughter, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to the 12400 block of Southeast Division Street at 9:21 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators said 61-year-old Damon Patrick Burton was crossing Division Street from north to south when he was hit by a car.

Police said the driver, identified as 40-year-old Clifford Eugene Perry Jr. of Portland, continued driving west until crashing into a concrete block at gas station on 122nd Avenue.

Investigators said Perry was driving at a high rate of speed when he hit Burton. Burton, who lives nearby, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers developed probable cause that Perry was intoxicated. He was arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of second-degree manslaughter, DUII and reckless driving.

Perry is scheduled to be arraigned in court Tuesday.

A passenger in his car was not injured.

Anyone with additional information about this investigation is asked to contact Officer Phil Maynard at 503-823-2216, phillip.maynard@portlandoregon.gov.

This is the 31st fatal traffic crash in Portland in 2016.
