'Little Free Library' in SE Portland damaged by fire

Posted: Updated:

A woman's Little Free Library outside her southeast Portland home went up in flames, and she said she thinks it was set on purpose.

Rita King said around 1:30 a.m. someone knocked on her door to let her know the library was on fire. Her husband called 911 while she grabbed a fire extinguisher to put out the flames.

King said a man told her he saw two men in front of the library and then saw a spark before the men laughed and ran off.

King said her neighborhood is pretty upset.

"My neighbors obviously have been upset. They loved that it was here. They used it for borrowing and lending."

King said she'd like to rebuild the library and has already had someone offer the materials, but first, they need to take down what's left of their first library.

Portland Fire said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
