PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Police are investigating the death of a 61-year-old man who was hit and killed while crossing Southeast Division Street Sunday night.

According to police, Damon Patrick Burton was pronounced dead on scene after being hit by a drunk driver.

His family said they were out of town when the crash happened.

"It was just shocking. We were shocked. We wanted to get home," his sister, Denise, said.

"We don't even know if he was in a crosswalk or if he was outside the crosswalk. We don't know yet so that's my question. I want to find out what happened."

Police said the person responsible has been identified as 40-year-old Clifford Perry Jr.

Perry has a list of prior convictions, including driving with a suspended license and speeding.

"It's just the mere fact that my little brother was very much to himself, he hardly went out of the house, he went to work and he's crossing the street and he gets hit. It just doesn't make sense to me," Denise said.

"It's sad, very sad. I'm really sad for his family and for my girlfriend and her family and it's just a tragedy," a friend said.
