PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

People who repeatedly violate driving and parking laws in Portland will soon get the boot.

The city will begin using a boot on cars Wednesday.

Drivers with more than $500 in unpaid parking tickets or six other delinquent citations will have the heavy contraption attached to their car, rendering it undrivable.

City leaders said the goal of using the boot is to give people a chance to pay their fines without piling on towing fees.

"This will be a benefit for those who have some delinquent citations and need to settle up," said Dylan Rivera with the Portland Bureau of Transportation. "This will give you an opportunity to settle with the court within 36 hours and avoid the more expensive towing charges and inconvenience of having your vehicle towed."

After settling the fines, the boot will be removed within an hour.

Anyone who fails to pay after 36 hours will have their car towed away.
