A paving project is causing delays on Highway 30 from the St. Johns Bridge to Cornelius Pass Road.

Highway repaving began on a seven-mile stretch of road Tuesday.

The project is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation's program to maintain and extend the life of state highways.

The contractor will separately pave each of the four highway lanes as well as the shoulders during daytime hours.

The paving is being done opposite the flow of commuter traffic to reduce backups. However, drivers are advised to expect delays of 20 minutes or more.

Work in the westbound lanes will take place from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and on 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Paving is starting on the inside lanes and, once complete, will shift to the outside lanes and shoulders.

The work is expected to last through September.
