PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It was a day of giving back for the Portland Winterhawks as they teamed up with the Sunshine Division Wednesday morning.

The hockey players put their skills to the test, packing food and clothing into emergency boxes for Portland families.

The effort is an annual tradition, according to team officials, where the players give back to the community that supports them so much.

We try to do something like this every year, and we don't really see the people but we know what we're doing, and we know it has an impact,” Winterhawks right wing Keegan Iverson said.

“We come out here for a good cause and we take a little bit of time out of our day, and … help someone who is in need,” defenseman Keoni Texeira added. “Unfortunately, we don't get to know who it is, but just knowing that we are helping them is heartwarming for us.”

The Winterhawks drop the first puck of the official season at the Moda Center on September 24 against Seattle.
