SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Deputies said a 51-year-old Aumsville man was walking down the middle of the road when he was hit by a car and killed in Salem.

Emergency crews responded to Cordon Road Northeast and Carolina Avenue Northeast at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Investigators said Baxter Harrell was walking on the centerline of Cordon Road when he was hit by an oncoming car.

Harrell was killed instantly, according to deputies.

Investigators said Harrell had left his home for a walk, but it is not known how he ended up so far from his home or why he was walking in the middle of the road.

The driver, who was on his way to work, stayed at the scene and has cooperated with the investigation. No citations have been issued in this case.
