Portland housing emergency extended for another year

Posted: Updated:

In an attempt to help combat homelessness and high housing costs, the Portland City Council voted to extend the housing emergency on Wednesday.

The vote extends the housing emergency for a year.

The city says rent in Portland has gone up 30 percent in the past five years and nearly 2,000 people are sleeping on the streets.

The housing emergency was first declared last October.

The city says by extending it another year, more resources will be available to help with the housing emergency including the creation of more temporary housing, shelters, and day storage units.
