Representatives of the Lincoln High School student body expressed their disappointment with their school district in a statement regarding Wednesday’s walkout.

Hundreds of Lincoln and Benson high school students gathered at Pioneer Courthouse Square Wednesday morning to protest Portland Public School’s decision to put a $759 million bond measure on the May ballot instead of the November ballot.

The proposed bond would have provided funding to address several district health and safety issues and improvements.

“The primary objective of today's walkout was to push for an emergency PPS School Board meeting to take place tomorrow, before the 5 p.m. deadline to submit the bond proposal for voting on the November ballot,” said a statement issued by student body co-presidents Riley Wilson and Marin Christensen and student bond advocate Michael Ioffe.

Despite the protest, PPS school board officials did not call for an emergency meeting.

Oregon state law requires public school board meetings to be announced 24 hours in advance. PPS had until 5 p.m. Wednesday to address the issue. The deadline has now since passed.

Board members said keeping the measure on the May ballot gives them more time to create a better plan to address issues and improvements needed in the district and to reach out to voters.

Lincoln HS students later expressed their frustration, claiming their voices had not been heard.

“We are very disappointed, as the voices of thousands of students and community members have been completely disregarded,” said student body representatives. “Although we encourage everyone to support a May bond, we also encourage everyone to have a serious discussion about the efficacy of their board members and the efficacy of their school district.”

Students are expected to return to school Thursday.
