PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Canby man was sentenced to one year in prison for stealing around $300,000 in social security benefits using his dead grandmother's identity over a 27-year period.

Ricky Lee Carlson, 63, pleaded guilty to theft of government funds in May. He was sentenced Wednesday.

Court records state Carlson's grandmother was using two different names and social security numbers at the time of her death in 1986.

The Social Security Administration was notified of her death under one identity, but benefits continued to be paid each mother under her other one.

Carlson opened a bank account in April 1995 using his grandmother's name and had her social security checks deposited in that account. He then converted the funds for his own use by writing checks payable to himself, as well as paying bills and making ATM withdrawals using that account.

Between March 1986 and December 2013, nearly $304,000 in benefits were improperly paid to his grandmother. When investigators discovered the theft, only $9,518 remained in the account.

Carlson was ordered to surrender to the Bureau of Prisons to begin his sentence on Jan. 17, 2017. He was also ordered to pay restitution to the Social Security Administration for the full amount of benefits stolen and serve three years post-prison supervision.
