PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Firefighters rescued a worker who was injured at a construction site 40 feet below street level in downtown Portland.

Portland Fire & Rescue crews responded to Southwest Broadway and Columbia Street at around 1 p.m. Thursday.

Images from the scene showed firefighters tending to the fallen worker at the bottom of a major construction project.

It was initially believed the worker had fallen, but firefighters later said that was not the case. They said the man broke his arm trying to remove shorting at the bottom of the 40-foot pit.

By 1:30 p.m., firefighters brought the worker up to the street and he was taken to the hospital.
