WASHINGTON COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland man was thrown from his car and died in a rollover crash in Helvetia.

Emergency crews responded to Northwest Phillips Road at 6:06 a.m. An off-duty Hillsboro police officer first reported the crash.

Deputies said a 2005 Nissan 350Z convertible was found heavily damaged in a field.

Investigators determined Christopher Smith, 46, of northwest Portland, was driving east on Phillips Road when he failed to negotiate a hill, struck a ditch and rolled his car several times.

The crash possibly occurred before midnight, according to deputies.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe Smith was driving at a high rate of speed, which contributed to the crash.

The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstructive Team responded to gather evidence and document the scene.
